glossy, convex, non-perpendicular with the axis of the shell ; the
rest graiiosely finely costate and transversely lirate, slightly convex
at the sides. Costæ about eighteen iu number ou a wborl, hardly
as broad as the interstices. Liræ finer than tbe ribs, six on the
upper whorls and about twenty on tbe last. Aperture small, narrow,
terminating anteriorly in a short, oblique, recurved canal.
Columella covered ivitb a callus bearing two small tubercles iust
below the middle. Labrum externally thickened witb a broadish

1 f " ’Ph which th at now described
should be placed, and which does not quite come under any one of
tho as yet named subgenera of Pleurotoma. They are small shells
vuth cancellated sculpture, having smooth apical ivborls, an in-
distinet labral smus, and liræ or denticles within tbo outer lip.

belong to this section.
The present species is remarkable on account of tbe proportionally
large size of tbe smooth nucleus, consisting of four and a half
volutions.

This charming little species consists of sèven whorls, three apical
smooth and convex, and four normal. I t is of a pink or almost
scarlet colour, has six rounded costæ on tbe body-wborl and seven
on the upper volutions ; these are crossed by scabrous spiral ridges,
of which there are two to three principal ones on the upper whorls,
more slender ones intervening between them and tbe suture, and
about seven on the last. The entire surface is beautifully ornamented
by raised lines of growth, so th a t tbe transverse ridges are
very prettily squamose. The aperture is small, ovate, and contracted
anteriorly into a narrow but not closed canal. Tho labrum is well
thickened exteriorly by tbe last varix, crenulated at the thin margin,
and finely lirate within. Sowerby mentions an orange-coloured
variety of this species ; but this is unknown to me. His figure is
very coarsely executed, magnified to more than ttvice the actual
length of tho shell, and shows only four costæ on the whorls, whilst
five are always visible from any point of view.
2 0 . Murex (Ocinebra) infans. ( P l a t e XLIV. fig. E.)
Shell small, ovately fusiform, whitish, stained with brown behind
the longitudinal ribs. Whorls 7, three apical smooth, convex ; tho
rest obliquely sloping above, tho slightest concave, then sharply
angled, straight below tbe angle and sloping inwards a little to
tbe suture beneath ; they are strengthened ivith moderately strong
longitudinal costæ, crossed hy stout spiral ridges and finer liræ.
