Iris
Writing ou this species in tho Fiji Islands, Mr. E. L. Layard observes
th at ho procured Anous cinereus ou tho coral-reefs north-east
of Yladagasear twenty years ago. Dr. llartlauh, in his ‘ Vögel Äfada-
gasears,’ very properly remarks th at this statement requiros couiir-
mation in the highest degree, an observation I thorouglily indorse.
Can it have been the present species (S. mdanauclien) which VIr.
Layard intended to write about ? Anyhow, tho range of the latter
species is now greatly extended.

This species appears to he allied to T. aldahranus, Sclater (P. Z. S.
1871, p. 692, pi. Ixxiii.) ; but the white on the belly, which is shown
in the plate, and referred to in Dr. Sclater’s description, does not
appear so prominently in the skins of the tj’pe specimens kindly
lent to me hy Prof. Xewton. The Glorioso Turtle-Dove differs from
T. aldahranus in its browner upper surface, by the bluish-grey
wash on the under tail-coverts, and especially in the pale vinous
forehead, which contrasts somewhat with the dusky ash-colour of
the head.
