Der rothkehlige Pieper, German.
This bird, whose breeding-haunts in Europe appear
to be confined to the extreme north and north-east of
that continent, has been recorded to have occurred
thrice in our islands, but is very possibly more common
on migration therein than is generally supposed. My
acquaintance with it is confined to the eastern shores
of the Mediterranean, on many parts of which it passes
the winter and early spring. As far as I have had
opportunities lor observation, its habits resemble very
closely those of our well-known Meadow-Pipit (Anthus
joratensis).
