T h is species is app.nrently confined to tlie G.nlap.igos Islands, whore it was discovered liy
tlie late Mr. Oharlos Darwin. li e found it on J.ames Island, and, during tho expedition
of the ‘ Venus,’ Dr. Neboux met with it on Cliaries Island. Dr. Ilabel, according to
Mr. Salvin, .saw the species on Indefatigable Island, but did not bring liome any spceiinens,
Mr. Darwin’s note on the species is as follows
“ This bird was observed only on this ono island of the group, and it was tbere very
far from common. It frequented a bold cliff of lava overhanging tllo sea. Had not
Mr. Gould characterized it as a distinct species, I should liavc considered it only as a
small variety, produced by an imcongenial site, of the Progne purjmrea. I can perceive
no difforonoc whatever from tlrat bird, excepting in its less size, slenderness of liiulis,
and less deeply forked ta il; and the latter difference may perhaps be owing to youtli.”
Tbo figure aud description are taken from tho type spceiiucn in the British
Museum.
