* This extraordinary species of Horned Lark is said to have been found in
“ Caflraria,” a habitat so foreign to the general range of the genus as to be almost
unbelievable. The researches of naturalists in South Africa, and of British officers
during the late war, have not confirmed the existence of such a distinct species of
Otocorys in South Africa, and one can only suggest that its habitat must be s o u g h t
elsewhere.
