* Mr. Ridgway suggests that the name of this species should be P. erythromelas
of Vieillot, as Linnaeus’s name Tanagra rubra, 1766, is ante-dated by Fringilla rubra
of Linnaeus (1758). In common with most British Naturalists, I do not recognise
the names in the 10th edition of Linnaeus’s ‘ Systema,’ and I follow Dr. Sclater in
preserving the name of P. rubra (Linn.) for the species.
1 Mr. Ridgway’s r'estitution of Trudeau’s, name (1837) is undoubtedly correct,
Lichtenstein’s name of erythromelas being preoccupied by that of Vieillot (1819), as,
indeed, is shown clearly enough by the synonymy in the ‘ Catalogue of Birds.’
