* I have followed Mr. Ridgway entirely as to the number of forms to be admitted into
this genus, not having sufficient material in the British Museum to warrant any criticism
of his views, and his observations (pp. 350-352) deserve the greatest consideration
from ornithologists, the facts which he brings forward as to the different races of
Melospizee being quite startling and of remarkable interest. He allows 20 subspecies
of M. cinerea.
