* This genus has so far been placed near Phcenicophilus, but Mr. Ridgway (‘ Birds
of North and Middle America’) points out that, being a ten-primaried bird, it must
be removed from the Tanagers and placed elsewhere.
t Dr. Sclater, in the ‘ Catalogue of Birds,’ separates this genus into two sections—
A, species with a stout Fringilline bill; B, species with a slender and more Sylviine
bill. The birds of the latter section, nos. 16-32, are considered by Mr. Ridgway to
belong to the genus Iiemispingus, which be also thinks should be referred to the
Mnioiiltid.ee (of. Birds of North and Middle America, ii. p. 426).
