IN offerin® to the world a new edition o f the work on South Sea Shells, the author
deems it neceffary to acquaint the public w ith the nature and principles o f a private
eftabliihment which he has formed for the inftrurfion o f youth, in the art o f illuftrating
and painting fubje&s o f natural hiftory; as it was in this feminary that die prefent, and
various other publications o f a fimilar kind, were executed, and in wh ich he flatters
h imfe lf many other performances o f equal merit w ill ihortly be produced, fo as to
refleft honour on the inftitution, and render its members as w ell o f real utility, as an
ornament to feveral branches o f the polite arts.
- I t is now upwards o f feven years fince the author firft commenced the deiign o f
attempting a new work on Shells ; the reafons for wh ich are given in the Introdudtion
to the work itfelf. One o f the principal inducements however to this performance
was, his becoming about that time poffelfed o f a coniiderable number o f new Ipecies,
found amongft different colleaions o f Shells wh ich he had recently purchafed o f feveral
officers then lately returned from the Pacific Ocean.
In the profecution o f this defign many and great difficulties neceffarily prefented
themfelves. T o execute a w ork perfeétly original in its kind, where the higheft and
mo il finiflied ftyle o f painting was intended particularly to charadterife the performance,
was an undertaking attended w ith obftacles o f no common magnitude : for to have
effedted this purpofe in the ordinary way, by employing thofe who might be found
capable o f executing the work according to the author’s ideas, would eventually have
been attended with an expenfe fo great, as in its neceffary confequences would more
than have trebled tire prefent price o f each volume.
O n e very ■p.flhntjal caufe o f this aggravation o f expenfe is, that there are few
artifts (we may indeed fay none) who peculiarly devote the application o f their
talents to this particular branch o f the art. O f the miniature painters who excel, it
can never be worth the while, without a very liberal compenfation, to interrupt their
exertions

EN préfentant cette nouvelle édition de l ’ouvrage fur les Coquilles de la M e r du
Sud, l ’auteur croit devoir rendre compte au public de la nature e t des principes
d’un établiffement particulier, qu’il a formé pour in ftruire la jeuneffe dans l ’art
d’expliquer et de peindre des fujets d’hiffoire naturelle j puifque c ’e ft dans cette école
que c e t ouvrage-ci, et divers autres du même genre, ont été exécutés, et qu’il fe flatte
que fous peu de temps il en fortira encore pliifieurs autres également intéreffans, et
capables d’honorer une inftitution, dont l’objet e ft de foire des élèves qui puiffent
devenir d’une utilité réelle pour différentes branches des beaux arts.
I l y a aujourd’h ui plus de fept ans que l’auteur eut d’abord l’idée d’entreprendre un
nouvel ouvrage fur les Coquilles; et il en donne les raifons dans l ’Introduétion qui eft
à la tête de l ’ouvrage même. Cependant un des principaux motifs qui l ’y déterminèrent,
c ’eft qu’alors il fe v it en poffëffion d’un nombre confidérable de nouvelles eipèces dé
Coquilles, qui fe trouvèrent parmi différentes colleétions qu’il en venoit d’acheter de
plufieurs officiers revenus depuis peu de la M e r Pacifique.
P our venir à bout de ion deflèin il avoit néceflâirement bien des difficultés à
yainére. L ’exécution d’un ouvrage parfaitement original dans ion genre, qui pour être
caraétérifé d’une manière particulière ne demandoit pas moins que le pinceau habile
d un peintre confommé, ¿toit une entrepriiê où il fe rencontrait des obftacles majeurs :
car en fuivant la méthode ordinaire, et en employant des artiftes capables d’exécuter
l ’ouvrage félon les idées de l ’auteur, on fe ferait je té dans une dépenfe énorme, e t il
aurait fellu plus que tripler le prix aétuel de chaque volume.
U ne des principales caufes de ce furcroît de dépenfe; c ’eft qu’i l n’y a que très-peu
d ’artiftes (et pas un pèut-être), qui confacrent leurs talens à cette branche particulière de
rhiftoire naturelle. Parmi les peintres en miniature, ceux qui excellent ne feront
jamais diipofés, fons en être amplement dédommagés, à quitter leurs propres occupations,
