Tlie cells of tliis genus are loosely arranged to form a cconobiuni of more or less spherical
shape, and each individual cell is furnished -witk a stout,, conical hom, -wMoli arises from a broad
base almost equal to the diametei- of tlie cell. The horn is sohd, and generally exhibits a striation
indicative of the layers of -which it is constructed. It gradually arises by a thickening of that
iurface of the ceU-wall directed to the outside of the colony.
Eeproduction takes place by the formation of 8-32 small gonidia within the mother-cell,
These are set free by the gradual dissolution of the mother-cQll-wnll, wliieh becomes gelatinous. At
this time the whole colony rapidly dissociates. The gonidia are non-motile, hut their development
was not observed.
A few instances were observed of what appeared to be a process of reproduction by budding
from tlie original motlier-cell, but nothing definite could be ascertained from the preserveil examples.
One of these cells is figured on PI. sii, fig. 21.
The nearest genus to BwkUUa is perhaps Scbmi die's Laulerhorniolla (Schmidle, Beitr. Kenntniss
Planktonalg, 1900, p. 149, t. 6, f. 2, 3), m which the ccanobium oonsists of four lunate ce,lls, each
cell possessing two horn»Uke spines.
