Order ; SIPHONE^E.
Family : V A D C H £ E I A O E£
Genus : Vaucheria DC.
13. VAUCHERIA ORIBNTALCS sp. n. (PI. xi, figs. 3-9).
V. aquatica et tenuis, filis modice ramosis nonnunquam subcontortis ; oogonia et
antheridia stipitata supra ramulos fructíferos perlongos, apice ramuli fructifcri fisso,
parto breviori oogonium formante, parte altera antlieridium formante; oogonio sessile,
prope antheridiuin terminalem, oblique ovato cum apice subproducto ; antheridio eircinato ;
oosporis glabris, oogonia complentibus.
Crass, fil. 26-30/I; long, oogon. 6-3-i>7U ; lat. oogoii. 5 0 - 5 4 : crass. auAerid.
Hah.—In marshe,^ Mansang near Hsipaw (No. 24193).
V orkntalh is allied to V. scrohieulata Maga, et Wille (ÌQ "Wille, Sydanierik. Algl. 1884,
p. 33, t. 2, f. 57-59), a South American species ia wiiich the reproductive organa are also
developed flt tlie ends o: ratter long fructiferous branches, It is^ however, a much narrower
species, and the oospores are not scTobicukte.
I t should also be compared with V. terreitrU Lyngb. and V. h'lmtta (Vauch.) Lyiigh., both
of which are much larger species with shorter fructiferous branches.
The filaments of V. orienlaU% are somewhat contorted, and the branching is more profuse than
is usually the case in species of this genus. The sesual organs are occasionally developed at the
extremity of a long filament as well as on special branches of the same oxtonsive cccnocyte. In
the formation of the sesual organs the extremity of tbe reproductive branch beeomes cleft, one
portion growing in a eircinate manner to form the antheridium, and the other enlarging to
form a sessile oogonium. The antheridial odll appears to be cut o£E from the supporting branch
some time before the oogonium is separated.
1 4 . VAUCHERIA GLOBULIFÜRA sp. n. ( P L xi, fig. 1 0 ).
V. aquatica et tenuis, filis fiexuosis parce ramosis; oogoniis sessilibus. oblique
OToideis, binis supra partem protuberantem filamenti suboppositis, ore late truncato ;
oosporis globosis glabris oogonia nan complentibus; antheridiis subcylindriois vel leviter
inHatis, diametro 2-3-plo longioribus, binis oppositis et subliorizontaliter dispositis.
Craas. fil. 40-42/^; long, oogon. 90-100/^ ; lat. oogon. 62-64^1; diam. oospor.
59-61m; crass, autherid. 23-30^^.

This species is nearest to V. sericea Lyngh., but the filaments are more slender, tbe oogonia
I larger and are not rostellate, the oospores are larger, and the antheridia are relatively broader.

2. sjjoiiiaiwum Nordst. is essentially tropical in its dislribution, and there appears to be a
certain amount of confusion -with regard to its identity. The specimens originally described by
Nordstedt from the Sandwich Is. possessed only aplanospores, but in 1897 we described the
zygospores from W. Africa. About the same time Schmidie described from Australia what he
considered to be a new species Z. Heijdrichi, but the only differences between liis plant and
Z. ipoHtaneum. are in its lateral conjugation and in the position of the zygospores in the
conjugating-tube. The wall of the zygospore is sorobiculate exactly as in Z. sponiancwn, and
Sohmidle's plant ia possibly a form of that speoies with a different type of conjugation.
The appended table of measurements is for closer comparison of the different forms of
Z. %pontai.mm with Z. Seydrichi Schmidie (Entwick. Zyga. u. Calothiix, 1897, p. 169, 170, t. 5,
