acuminate, sometimes deeply divided into acute lobes; edges irregularly dentate; length
ot blade from 5 to 8 in. ; base S-ncrved; lateral primary nerves about 3 or 4 pairs, rather
prominent; secondary nerves transverse. (The leaves of j'oung shoots are often very large,
have palmate nervation, and arc divided into as many as /) to 7 lobes.) Upper surfaces
of leaves scabrid or sparsely hispid, especially on tho nerves; lower surface (except the nerves
which are nearly glabrous) densely covered with short, usually white, sometimes reddishwhite
tomentum ; p'^tioles 1"5 to 3 in., pubescent or glabrous ; stipules ovate-lanceolate,
jiubesccnt at first, ultimately glabrous, from-3 to- 5 in. long. Receptacles sessile, in pairs,
itxillary, depresssd-globose, rarely ovoid, slightly uinbouate; when young pubescent;
when ripe smooth, bright yellow in colour, and from -3 in. to -i in. across; basal
bracts 3, broadly ovate, blunt. Male flowers few, and only near the mouth of the receptacles
containing gall flowers, sessile, short, broad; the perianth of 3 broad, imbricated,
free pieces; stamens 1 or 2. G-all flowers mostly pedicellate; the perianth of 5 lanceolate
pieces; the ovary ovoid, smooth; stjde short, lateral; stigma infandibuliform, Fertile female
flowers sessile, or shortly pedicellate; the achene obliquely ovoid, with a very tuberculate,
crustaceous epicarp; style lateral, as long as the achene ; stigmx cylindric.
Southern part of the Malayan Peninsula, and over the whole Archipelago, up to
elevations of 4,000 f t . Very common and variable.
I have little doubt that a tri-lobed form of this formed the basis of the Roxburghian
species F. palniaia.

Tins is not very well represented in collections, altliongli it is by no means an
nnconrmo,. troe in Western Java. A form of this .-¡ill rra, rower leaves smoother on
the nnper smiace than those of tho type, was separated as a variety m,der the nan,e
crhcuhrü by Miqnel; bnt it scarcely deserves separation even as a va„ety. The plant
issued as Herb. Zoll. 651 was originally named F. film, Eeinw., by Zollmger Inm.sc 1,
but Minuel made a spocies of it under the name « p i M . Miquol had previously g.von the
name apicuMa to a species collected by Wight I No. 1016 Ihrb. Wi,U). which I have not
seen, but wl.ich, judging from Iliquel's description ([.ond. Journ. Bot. yi. 570!, was a

himself. I have seen no specimen of it.
Keceptacles containing u.ale and gall flowers are by no means common. Count bohns
Laubach states {Hot. Zdt for 1885, p. 516) that during his stay at Bmtenmrg he had
never been able to find one with male flowers. Some specin.ens which I myself collected
in the Preanger Province of W. Java boar such receptacles, aud from one of those the
figures given by me have been drawn. The forms oi this species may be grouped into
two sets, as follows:—
FOEMA TYPICA. Leaves rounded, more or less lobed. This is the form originally
named fdva by Reinwardt,
VAK. MIKOH. Leaves ovate or elliptic, Under this (all the forms described as
flavidtila and clihrocarpa by Miqucl.
