Golden Polypody.
P o ly p o d ium a u r e u m : — R o o t -s to ck stout, creeping, v e r y
chaffy, with n a rrow b righ t-b row n sca les ; sta lk s scattered, ra ther
strong, s ix to eigh t inches high, brownish, smooth, and som ewh a t
s h in in g ; fronds a foot o r more long, sub-coria ceous, smooth,
g lau co u s-g re en , e sp ec ia lly beneath, o v a te in outline, deeply pinnatifid
; lobes three to s ix inches long, five to eighteen lines wide,
oblong-lanceolate from a broad base, undulate on the margin, but
o th erwise entire, the terminal one a s la rg e a s the others ; ve in s
reticulated, fo rm in g n a rrow areoles a lo n g the midrib, outside o f
these one or two row s o f la rg e r ones en clo s in g so riferous veinlets,
and between these and the m argin numerous sma ll sterile areoles ;
.sori in a s in g le row each side the midrib o f the segm en ts , o r in
la rg e fronds in two o r three rows, the outer row irregular, comm
on ly sea ted on the connivent tips o f two included veinlets.
