B o t r y c h iu m V i r g in i a n u m : — Plant sparsely hairy, usually
from eight inches to two feet high ; sterile segment membranaceous,
sessile near the middle of the plant, broadly deltoid,
ternate; the primary divisions stalked, once to three times
pinnatifid; secondary divisions ovate-lanceolate, ultimate divisions
toothed at the ends; fertile segment long-stalked, twice
to four times pinnate ; base of stalk opening by a longitudinal
chink, and disclosing the pilose bud.
