the stalk, and persists lo n g a fte r the pinnules h a v e fallen off.
T h e fronds are n a r row ly linear in outline, evergreen, and
bear a g re a t n umber o f little pinnæ, wh ich are articulated to
the rachis, and leave a s c a r wh en th ey drop off, as th e y do
about a y e a r a fter the frond is produced. T h e pinnæ are
smooth, da rk-green above, a little pa ler beneath, and v a r y
much in shape. On sma ll fronds th e y are roundish-obovate,
and s ca rc ely a line lon g ; in la rge r fronds th e y are oblong-oval,
four or five lines long, and h a v e the base broader on the upper
side than on the lower. T h e m argin is e ither entier,
o r crenulate, or toothed, or in va r . incisum incised w ith toothed
lobes. T h e sori are u su a lly few in number, borne on the
upper side o f the m o s tly once-forked veins, ob lo ng in shape,
and covered b y a delicate indusium composed o f v e r y tortuous
cells and h a v in g com m on ly a s ligh t ly crenulate margin.
T h e spo ran gia h a v e a rin g o f about seventeen jo ints, and the
spores are o void and roughened w ith ir re gu la r an astomo sing
w in g ed ridges.
