Having given at Plate 256. an exain|)le of wbat F r i e s , according
to his most recent investigations, considers an Auricularia,
we now offer a specimen of the genus Thelephora, as restricted
by the same author.
Two other species Th. caryophyllea and Th. terrestris, arc
nearly allied to the present one, and have mostly been confounded
with it in this country, P e r s o o n has united our plant with
the foi-mer of these; but there can be no question it ranks
nearest the latter; and I follow F r i e s in keeping them all
distinct.
