H ab. On the trunks of trees, damp walls, &c. ; abundant every where.
Plant of a lively full green colour, spreading very extensively over the
trunks of trees, and staining the fingers on the slightest touch. Granules
very minute, exceedingly numerous, densely aggregated, and forming
an uneven surface. They are perfectly free, semitransparent, and
adhere together in an opposite manner by fours ; no gelatinous substratum
or connecting medium is perceptible.
In my observations upon Palmella botryoides, represented
at Plate 243. of this work, I mentioned that two plants appeared
to be confounded together, under the old name of B y ssus
botryoides. I have since become confirmed in this supposition
; and having already figured the Palmella botryoides as
one of them, I proceed to offer the other under the name of
