Being part of the Ukraine, or Little Ruffia, was once a dutchy
belonging to the great dukes, and Kiof, the capital; was their
principal refidence. This country was conquered by the Tartars,
came again into the poflèffion of the great dukes, but was
over-ran and poffeffed by the Coffacs, under the protedlion of
Poland.
In 1654, the natives, difeontented with John Cafimir, king of
Poland, fubmitted to Ruffia, and have ever fince continued fub-
je£t to that empire. The vaft privileges enjoyed by the natives
have been gradually aboliihed,. and: they are now reduced to the
famé ilate as the other provinces of the Ruffian empire.
