Konigiberg contains an univerfity, founded by Albert of Bran-
denburgh. According to the original endowment there were
forty profeffors; but their number is now reduced to fixteen.
Each profeflor receives a falary of about £ . 50 per annum,
which may be increafed by private ledtures. In 1775, the univeriity
verfity contained 800 iludents, o f whom 20a are lodged and c h a p .

boarded at the expence of the crown. There are three public , l
libraries in the town, the Royal or Univerfity Library, the Town
Library, and the Wallenrodt Library, fo called, becaufe it was
given by Martien von Wallenrodt, in 1650.
In the lall-mentioned colledtion I was ihewn the original fafe-
condudt granted to Luther by Charles the Fifth, and figned by
that emperor’s own hand. Trufting to this fafe-condudl, Luther
appeared at the diet of Worms, notwith{landing the re-
monftrances of his friends, who reminded him of the fate of
John Hufs on a fimilar ocrafion. But Luther, with that undaunted
fpirit which accompanied all his adtions, filenced his
friends by declaring, that he was lawfully called to appear in
that city, and “ thither will I go,” he added, “ though as many
devils as there are tiles in the houfes were combined againil
me.”
As he could not be prevailed upon, either by threats or intreaties,
to retradt his opinions, fome of the Romiih clergy, with
that fcandalous fophiftry which deemed that faith ought not to
be kept with heretics, propofed to imitate the example of the
Council of Conftance, and to condemn Luther to the flames.
But as the members of the diet ftartled with horror at another
violation of the public faith, and as Charles peremptorily refufed
to itain his adminiftration by fuch an ignominious adtion, Luther
was permitted to retire in fafety *, and completed the reforma-
