^ Í ^HE houfes o f the Icelanders aré
A. not alike throughout the country.
According to fonie clefcriptions, they
are tolerable on the north fide o f the
ifland ; but on that part o f Iceland
which I have feen, they were all extremely
bad, excepting thofe o f the
governor at BefTeftedr, the phyflcian’s
at Seltiarnarnes, and the flieriffs at
Wido, that were built o f flone at
the king’s expence. In Ibme pareó
the dwellings and other buildings o f
the Icelanders are made of drift-wood,
in others they are raifed o f lava, almoft
in the fame manner as the ftone-
walls we make for inclofures, with
mofs ftuifed between the lava. In
fome houfes the walls are wainfcotted
