O f Mount Heckla.

n n HE caufe o f Heckla (or, as it is
JL called in the country, Eecklu-
fiall) having been more noticed than
many other volcanos o f as great extent,
and no lefs wonderful and in-
ftruaive, may partly be afcribed to its
having vomited fire fo frequently, and
partly to its fituation, which expofes it
to the fight o f all the ihips failing to
Greenland and North America: as we
confidered it with greater attention
than any other volcano on the iiland, I
will give you a defcription o f the ftate
in which we found it on the 24th o f
September 1772.
After we had feen many trails o f
lava, among which Garde and Hva-
leyre Hraun^were the moil confider-
