anceftors in Sweden, and thence we
find fo many kinds o f what are called
villrunes that were unintelligible to
the vulgar. See in Bautil, 25,

822, lo o i , 1088, and many more in
Wormius. Perhaps what we call
among us heljinge runes, have alio no
other origin, as the greater part of
them only differ from the common
runes, by having the ilaff taken away.
It is however remarkable that our
gravers o f runes even made ufe of this
cryptographys in monuments ereded
to the memory and honour o f the deceafed.
It is further aiked, i f there are any
external or internal traces o f the co-
pyiil having confidered all the above-
mentioned pieces, or at leaft the three
firil parts, as a conneded work I

Lagerbring, that the. Rubric was
wrote in a later hand.; which is
right, fo far as has been added after
the Edda itfelf was. begun, as may
be feen by the narrow ipace left
for it, fo that it has forced the co-
pyift to bring the laft line into that
immediately preceding it. Befides, I
dearly perceived that the inanufcript
