verv low toward the fouth. Near the
parfonage Skaggeilad, at Laugernas;
are likewife fome ruins of a leiler
cafile, but it is not known by w'hom,
or when it was built. In other places
are remains o f heathen temples ; viz*
at Midfiord, Godale, Vidvik, and
others : at Hegranas is a kind of
antient place of execution ; there are
alfo feveral burying-places from the
times o f paganifm, among them I ihall
only mention Thorleif Jarlafkalds,
iituate on a fmall iiland in the Oxaraa.
Some old fwords and helmets have
likewife been found, but they have
not cleared up any part of hiilory.
On the heaths o f Thingmans and
Threkyllis are two great ilones (landing
upright, which moii probably
were eredled as monuments to the
memory o f fome deceafed perfons,
according to Odin’s regulation* This
cuilom, which was long pradtifed in
the North, has from thence been
brought to Iceland ; though it was
not ufual in Sweden till a long time
after to put any infcription on the
monm
monument. I have been told, that
fome years ago, forty fmall figures of
brais were found in the ground near
Flatey, reprefenting animals and other
objedls; bnt unfortunately they fell
into the hands o f people who did not
know their value, confequently they
have been all loft.
There are no other monuments re^
inainlng of Sturlefon, befides his writings,
but a mount over-grown with
grafs at Reikholt, which is faid to
have been raifed from the ruins o f his
houfe ; Sturlunga Reitur, the bnrying-
place o f his family ; and at a little
diftance from them, Snorra Lang, one
of the fineft baths in all Iceland,
This bath, which is large enough to
contain 50 perfons at one time, is in-
clofed with a wall o f bafalt, and bath
incruftatioiis; it has a fmooth level bottom,
and is furrounded with benches.
In Sturleibn’s time a long covered paft-
age led fVom tlience to the dwelling-
lioufe, fo that the bathers retired from
the bath without being expofed to the
cold. The fpring is at forty paces
diftance, and is called Scribla, and
