proached at low water as at Reyka-
fiord in Ifa-fiord, where four fprings
may be obferved in the water by the
afcending fleam, and one hver on the
furface of the water. There are alfo
two others in the Oddbiarnar ilioals,
ilill more at Drapficar, and a great
nqmber by Sando, Urdholm, Reykey,
and on the flat iilands. To give a
better idea of the fituation o f thefe
fprings, I will give a lift o f them,
that 1 will endeavour to make as topographical
as pofiible.
In Borgarftord’s SylTel, uearLeyraa,
not far from the foot of the mountain
o f Skardilieide, we met with the firft
hver, which is, hpwever, not a very
ftrong one ; and not far from it
there is a fmall bath. At Lunda Rey-
kiadal there is a hver and a bath ;
and near a farm-yarcl, Varma-Lakiar-
Muia, a warm fpring and a bath. A
little farther to the north is the valley
o f Reykholts, that is two miles and
a half in breadth, in the bottom of
which hot baths are every where to be
met with. This fpot may be difcpvered
at feveral miles diftance by the vapours
that
[ 253 ]
tliat exhale every where from the hot
water, and unite in the air, refem-
bllng a prodigious fmoke arifing from
fonie volcano. The three principal
hvers in this place are, Tungniiver,
Aaa-hver, and Scribla ; the laft fur-
nifties water to Snorralaug (Snorre
Sturlefon’s bath) that is efteemed the
beft in Iceland. From this place there
is no hot ipring to be met with northward
for a very large trafl, till you
come to Siieefield’s Cape, where tliere
is a lukewarm fpring near the farm
called Lyfehol, in Stadefveit : and at
this place many remains of antient
hvers are to be feen. Still further to the
north, in Dale Syifel, is a warm bath
with fome fprings. In Soliiig’s Valley,
and further on, - near the farm Reyka-
holer, in Reykianas, are many ftrong
hvers; particularly three very large
ones, but the moft confiderable of them
is Krablanda. From thence we came
to the hot iprings of Flatdarna, Odcls-
biarrnarfkar, and Drap&ar ; and afterwards
vifited thoie at Talkne-fiord, Ar-
nar-fiord, and Ifa-fiord in Keyka-fiord,
where there is a ftrong fpouting fpring.
