This species of H ydnum is by no means frequent: indeed,
tbe specimens figured, are tbe only ones I ever saw, and were
drawn on tbe spot. No plant can be better cbaracterised tban
is tbe present one, by its scaly pileus and sbort tbick stem: it
is sufficient to bave once seen a plate of it in order to recognise
it.
Tbis, as well as all tbe otber species of tbe genus, is edible,
and used on tbe Continent as food. Vid. PI. 44. of tbis
