Hymenium aculeatum. Aculei vel processi subulati, liberi, carnosi, sporulìferi.
Hymenium spinose. Spines or awl-shaped processes free, carnose, sporuliferous.
SPECIFIC CHARACTER.
H y d n um imbricatum ; pileo carnoso, plano, tessulato-squamoso, azono, umbrino,
acuMs albido-cinereis ; stipite brevi, (Fries).
H. pileus fleshy, plane, tessulato-squamose, zoneless, brown, the spines greyish
white ; stem short.

found only in Bedfordshire by Mr A b b o t, and near Maidstone and Bungay
by Mr W o o dw a rd .
Pileus 2 -5 inches broad, th ic k an d fleshy, plane or s lig h tly convex, an d

reg u la r in form, v a ry in g in color from red d ish to a k in d o f m ouse-brown,
scaly ; scales imbricated, numerous, th e c en tra l ones b e in g often mere
cracked portions o f th e pileus, which ren d e rs th a t p a rt tessellated. Flesh
pale huffish or reddish. Hymenium composed o f numerous, very short,
obtuse, greyish-white, entire spines, o f nearly[^equal length. Stipes centra
l, 1-2 inches long, often above 1 inch th ick , firm, irreg u la r, whitish.
