plant is SO remarkably distinct, that wore it not for tbe obscurity
of its history, wo should have no hesitation whatever in admitting
it as a species ; and wo are even now so convinced of its distinctness,
that we append the following definition, in tbe hope that it may yet
be recognised as a native Scottish plant.
A. refi’actum : fronds linear, subbipinnate ; pinnæ short oblong obtuse, refracted,
pinna te a t the base, pinnatifid above ; pinnules (the lowest anterior one only-
distinct, th e rest more or less confluent) roundish, with a few coarse angular
niucrouate teeth, th e upper two-four toothed, th e lower ones overlaiiping ;
sori short oblong oblique, in a line on each side near th e costa of th e pinnæ ;
rachis cliestnut-coloured, marginate above, n o t mnged, bulbil-bearing.

Compared witb Asplenium fontanum, the fronds of Asplenium
refractum, are longer and narrower in proportion, being seven or
eight inches higb, and not more than three-fourths of an inch
wide. They have a dark brown raobis throughout, wbich is not
distinctly winged, as in fontanum, although there is a slight green
decurrent line at tbe upper angles between tbe pinnæ. The outline
is different, being equal and almost linear, not broader upwards ;
tbe lower pinnæ are scarcely more distant than tbe rest, and all tbe
pinnæ are refracted in a remarkable manner, as well as much less
divided. Tbe habit of growth is spreading, and the fronds are
proliferous. Tbe Kttle bulbils are formed principally at tbe junction
of tbe pinnæ witb tbe raobis.
THE LANCEOLATE SPLEENWORT.
ASPLENIUM LANCEOLATUM.
A. fronds lanceolate, rigid, glabrous, bipinnate ; pinnæ ovate-
lanceolate; pinnules obovate or obliquely ovate, blunt, lobed or
tootbod, tbe teetb coarse angular mucronato ; raobis with sbgbtly
elevated margins in front, not winged, minutely scaly ; sori sbort,
oblong, produced towards tbe margin. [Plate LXVIII.]
