In one or other of its forms, this protean species spreads over
Europe, from Lapland through Scandinavia, Russia, Great Britain,
Holland, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Germany, Hungary, Croatia,
Transylvania, Italy, Spain, and Portugal, to Greece and Crete, extending
to the Caucasus and the Hral Mountains. It spreads over
northern or Russian Asia from the Trans-Caucasian provinces and
