como up in spring, bear fruit more or less, persist more or less, but
never grow more tban ono year ; while those of II. tmUaterale go
on grooving j’ear after year. A great number of the fronds which
were on the plants when placed in tho ease went on growing, bore
fruit at or near the extremity of tho fronds that year, grew on again
and bore fruit last year, and are doing tho same this year (1866),
so that some fronds aro ton inches long, and wido in proportion.
This is not tho effect of cultivation, as the wild plant does exactly
the same—growing ‘ annotinously,’ in fact, exactly as occurs in
lycopodium Selago and Bartramia Ralleriana, there being no distinot
marks between the different years’ growth.”
This species is moro extensively distributed than H. tunbridgense,
though the two plants very frequently occur in company. The present
is met vdth in the south-west of England, and is reported from
several midland counties ; it is found both in North and South Wales ;
and in the north of England, especially in the Lake District, it becomes
plentiful. It is the commoner of the two species in Scotland, occurring
both in the Lowlands and Highlands as far north as Suther-
landshiro, and extending even to the Northern and Western Isles.
In Ireland it ocom-s plentifully, and in aU the provinces. In altitudinal
range this plant is found from the coast level to an elevation
of upwards of 2700 feet, which it attains in the outer Hebrides,
according to the observations of Dr. Balfour and Mr. Bahington.
The foUovdng habitats more exactly indicate its range.
