When writing his book on ‘ British Mammals,’ Mr. Lydekker considered that
Bechstein’s Bat, having once occurred in Great Britain, could hardly be included
in his lis t; but since that date (1895) several specimens have been taken, and
he is now fully convinced of its right to be reckoned among the British fauna.
The same author has, however, very properly excluded Vesperugo discolor,
Vespertilio dasycnemel and Vespertilio murinus, all of which (at the date of his
writing) had been taken once in England, and were included by Bell in British
Quadrupeds on the most slender evidence. The existence of the Reindeer within
historic times is certainly doubtful, but as there is some evidence of its existence
in Caithness and the Orkneys at the period when our history commences, I have
included it in the above list. It is doubtful, too, whether the White Cattle should
