The male hag the upper parts black, each feather crossed with waving liucs of leaden gray; the scapulars and wings arc of a reddish brown,
mottled irregularly like the back ; the primaries dark brown, with rcdiiish brown slinfls; tbe npjier tail coverts blaek, mottled with rufous, and
broadly tipped with white; tail uniform black, the feathers broader than that of Canadensis, and nearly square nt the tip. The throat, upper
|>art of breast, and centre of belly pure blaek; a white line from the eye continues nroiiml the hlack of the throat. Feathers on tlio sides of the
breast and belly, with conspicuous bars of white. Tho flanks, barred and mottled liko the wings, the feathers having a white lino in the centre
expanding toward the tip. Under tail coverts black, brontlly tipiied with white. Thighs and tarsi light brown, faintly barrcil with darker
brown. BiU black.
Female. Entire upper parts gray, barred with black aud orange yellow, those on the liead nnd neck being narrow, bat becoming broader
and conspicuous ou the upper part of tho ba ck ; upper tail coverts gray crossed with black, aud bat faintly with orange yellow, tlio outer
feathers tipped with white, and running more than half way down the tail. Wings reddish brown, irregularly barred ivith black; some of tho
secondaries havo a central lino of white, widening a t tho top. Primaries brown, with tho outer webs yellowish brown. Throat wliite, spotted
with black. Upper parts crossed xvith black and orange yeUow, the feathers tipped with white, this last becoming more prominent on the
beUy and flanks. Tail black, conspicuously barred with dark orange yellow, and tipped with white. Under coverts black crossed with yellow,
and broadly tipped with white; so that when they are iu position one above the other, it appears as though the coverts wore white. Thighs
and tarsi ashy brown, with marks of white appearing tlu-ongh the feathers on the former. Bill black.
