Nineteen species are enumerated in this work, none of which are described for the first time. All are valid
but two F. discolor, which is a black F. concolor, Linn., and F. capensis, founded on the Cape Cat of Pennant,
which is the F. sei'val of Erxleben.

On plate 10 of the Atlas accompanying the French translation of Azara’s ‘ Voyages,’ a figure of the Yaguarondi
Cat is given; and beneath it the name Felis yaguarondi is attributed to Lacépbde ; and as this apparently is the
first Latin designation affixed to the species, it would seem that Lacépbde may be deemed its describer. Species 17.

A list of twenty-eight species is given in this publication, many of which are merely synonymous with
others ; and in some instances accounts of their habits axe added. According to the determinations of this monograph,
only twenty-two species are valid, of which four are described for the first time. These are F. canadensis, F.
javanensis, F. eyra, and F. pageros. The bad species are no. 9, which is F. pardalis, Linn., F. melas, black
variety from Java of F. parous, Linn., F. mexicana = F. jaguarondi, Azara, F. guigna = F. tigrina, Erxl., and
F. undata = F. javanensis, Desm. Species 22.

In this work the author gives a short list of the species of this family, but does not include all those known ;
no new species axe described; and only one of those enumerated is synonymous with another, viz. F. melas, a
black variety of F. pardus from the East Indies.

In the second volume of this valuable work, a list of the species known to the authors is given, with plates
and descriptions. Each article bears the date of its publication ; and the species newly described will be found
under the respective years in which they were published. Fifteen valid species are given, the remainder being
melanisms, or other varieties of known species.
1820.—D e s m a r e s t , ‘ M a m m a l o g ie .’
Following his account in the ‘Dictionnaire d’Histoire Naturelle,’ the author gives a list of twenty-nine species
of Felis. Two varieties of F. leo are recognized, viz. le lion de Sénégal, and le lion d’Arabie. The Black Couguar
(F. discolor) is properly considered the same as F. concolor, Linn. ; and the F. nigra of Erxleben is also made a
synonym of F. onca, Linn., of which it is a melanitic variety. Two species of leopards are admitted—F. pardus,
Linn., and F. leopardus, the former having larger and fewer spots than the latter. F. melas, ex Pérou, is deemed
a good species, but should be referred to F. concolor, Linn., of which it is only a melanism. Various races of
F. rufa, Güldenst., are given as distinct, such as F. fasciata, F. montana, F. floridana, F. aurea. These are all
synonymous with F. rufa, Linn., from which they cannot be separated. F. caracal, Güldenst., is also regarded
as possessing three races, namely:—var. A, Caracal d’Algérie, Buff.; var. B, Caracal de Nubie, B u ff; and var. C,
Caracal de Bengale, Buff. These, however, are but one and the same species. F. galeopardus is probably the
F. sei'val of Erxleben, described from an animal in captivity. F. undata, founded upon the Chat sauvage indien of
Vosmaer, is apparently a hybrid between a domestic cat and probably F. chaus, Güldenst. 'F. obscur a is a black
F. caffra, Desm. ; F. mexicana is F. jaguarondi, Lacép., ex Azara. Four races of the domestic cat are allowed as
varieties of F. catus, Linn., viz :■—F. catus domesticus, Linn. ; F. catus cæruleus, Linn. ; F. catus hispanicus, Linn. ;
and F. catus angorensis, Linn. In the Supplement to this work, two species are described—Felis caffra and F.
bengalensis, the latter founded on Pennant’s Bengal Cat. Species 24.

In this work we have a complete monograph of the family to date. Twenty-seven species axe given, with
their synonymy, and three described for the first time, viz.:—F. aurata, changed in the appendix to F. chrysothrix;
F. pardina; and F. cervaria. To F. leo, Linn., are given three varieties:—a, Lion de Barbarie; b, Lion de Sénégal;
c, Lion de Perse. F. serval, Erxleb., is called capensis, F. borealis = F. canadensis, Desm.; F. cdligata — F.
caff'a, Desm.; F. maniculata also = F. caffra; F. minuta = F. javanensis, Desm. A light variety of F. chrysotkrix,
Temm., is called F. celidogaster. Species 28.

F. diardi (non Desm.) = F. javanensis, Desm.; F. capensis = F. serval, Erxl. No new species are described. -
