Height of plant 2 to 4 dm. SUm clothed at the base with three or ionr loose
tubular acute sheaths. Leaues usually three, up to S-5 em. long, ovate-elliptic or
oblong, acute, slightly narrowed to the sheathing base, puberulous; the lower and upper
ones smaller and narrower. Fediuicle pubesccnt, bearing a solitary ilower. Flmer reddishor
purplish-red, 6-3 cm. in vertical diam.; floral Iraci longer than the flower, narrowly
elliptic, acute or acuminate, slightly concave, many-nerved. Donal sepal broadly ovate,
acute, somewhat concavci lateral pair nan-ower and slightly longer, connate mider the
lip. Petals spreading, longer than the dorsal sepal, narrowly oblong, subacute. Lip subglobose,
many-nei-ved, pendent, its mouth wide and crenate. Stamimde broadly ovate,

of N. Kumaon in birch forests between 11,000 and 12,000 feet, Dtitbie No. 5994.
Flowers during July and August. Found also in Sikkim and Bhutan and beyond the
British frontier in E . Tibet and China.
