I n conclusion I wish briefly but cordially to express my thanks to all those
who have kindly assisted mc during the preparation of this work. I am especially
glad to avail myself of this opportunity of saying how very much T am indebted
to my fi'iend, Mr. Plrilip Mackinnon, T. L. S., whom 1 have known in India for
many years as an enthusiastic botanist. To turn attention more particularly to the
practical resulte of the interest he has taken in the subject of this memou-, I may
mention that no less than nine undescribed species were discovered by htm and his
native collectors in the neighbom-hood of Mussoorie, also several other rare and
interesting specics, which had not previously been recorded as "Western Himalayan.
I am very much obliged to all those wlro have kindly aided me with orchid
specimens from various parts of the "Western Himalaya, and trust that I may not
have failed to mention them by name tluoughout the pages of this book. Prom
Sir Joseph D. Hooker, who has always taken a great interest in my botanical work
in India, I have received very great help and encouragement. To Sir "William T.
Thiselton-Dyer I am much indebted for having kindly allowed me, when in India,
to consult Mr. B. A. Holfe, the well-known orchid specialist at Kew, concerning
some of the more critical species. I wish also to acknowledge the great assistance
I have received from Mr. Rolfe since my return to England, as well as from
Mr. "W. Botting Hemsley, the Keeper of the Uoyal Herbarium. Lastly, I desu-e to
thank my friend, Major D. Prain, for his wOling and valuable help on many occasions,
and for the trouble he has taken in supervising the preparation of the lithographs
and the printing of the letterpress.
