Planta perennis, foliorum radicalium fasciculis confertissimis cæspitem compactum efformans. R adix fibrosa ; fibris cras-
siusculis, subsimplicibus, lanulosis. Caules .1/2-1 1/2-pedales (speciminibus hebetatis etiam occurrunt 3-4-pollicares), pro
cæspitis densitie parci, graciles, terètiusculi, v. Ienticulari-compressi (præsertim internodiis inferioribus), medulla farcti, modo
plus minusve flexuosi modo strictiores, striatuli, glaberrimi, lævigati, remote foliati, 3-5-nodi, simplicissimi v. parce ramosi
(ramis cauli similibus), inferne geniculati et vérôsimiliter plus minusve decumbentes. Internodia vaginis nunc vix æquilonga,
nunc plus minusve exserta. Articulus summus plerumque demum longe exsertus, haud raro semi-pedalis. F olia subcoriacea,
rigida, glauca, crassiuscula, striata, complicata (nunquam involuta; raro caulina summa subplana), basi articulata (unde
exsiccata facillime a vagina soluta), marginibus attenuatis et carina dorsali scabra (sub lente cartilagineo-serrulata), cætero
glabra. Folia radicalia distiche conferta, compresso-carinata, anguste linearia, acutiuscula, plus minusve arcuata (nunc deor-
sum nunc introrsum), v. etiam recta, 4-.i 5 lineas longa'.(interdum longiora; raro circiter 2 pollices longa) et in statu compli-
cationis i /3-i /2 lineæ lata. Folia caulina recta v. arcuata, invicem remota,{anguste lineari-lanceolata (foliis radicalibus tarnen
plerumque latiora) v. sublinearia, apice acutata v. breve subulata,modo pleraque elongata (inferiora 1-2 pollices longa),
iriodo omnia v. pleraque brevia v. brevissima; summa plerumque subulato-filiformia, baud raro minima (1-2 lineas longa).
V aginæ glabræ v. sparse puberulæ v. ore hirsutæ, lævigatæ, striatæ, margine membranaceæ; summæ involutæ, herbaceo-
membranaceæ, sub anthesi subventricosæ et laxiusculæ; reliquæ subcoriaceæ, adpressæ, complicatæ, compressas, carinatæ,
carina serriilato-ciliolatæ. Vaginæ foliorum radicalium; pérsistentes, erectæ, distiche imbricatæ, ensiformi-lineares, 1/2-1
pollicem longæ. Spicæ 1-2 1/2 pollices longæ (plerumque subsesquipollicares, geminæ (at sæpissime semet adeo admotæ villo-
rumque .ope cohærentes ut spicam référant unicam quadrifariam), erectæ, strictæ, lineares, densæ, compressai, e spiculis
numerosis compositæ, conspicue hirsutæ florumque aristis exsertis. plus minusve'divergentibus setosæ. R hachis flexuosa, continua,
filiformis, triquetra, angulis ciliolata. S piculæ subsessiles, subpatentes (saltern defloratæ), alternæ, distichæ, subimbri-

interdum trifloræ. F lores cujusve spiculæ ad rhachillam filiformem basi articulatam et barbatam subsessiles, alterni, distichi,
exarticulati, omnes uni-aristati ; flores duo inferiores majores, hermaphroditi, triandri, bipaleacei, plerumque tarnen flos in-
fimus solus fructum perficiens; flores duo superiores minores, neutri, uni-v. bi-paleacei, interdum accedente flore quinto
terminali ad aristam tenuem redacto; spiculæ trifloræ flore hermaphrodito unico gaudent. Gluma bivalvis, persistens (etiam
delapsa rhachilla fructifera), floribus (eorum aristis prætermissis) paulo longior, stramineav. violascens. V alvæ membranaceæ,
subpellucidæ, inæquilongæ, alternæ, naviculares, carinato-uninerviæ (nervo filiformi, excurrente), mucronatæ v. breve aris-
tulatæ, æquilateræ, erectæ, subdivergentes, glabræ, dissimiles. V alva inferior (rhachi proxima) ovato-v. oblongo-lanceolata,
acuminata, brevior. V alva superior (rhacheos respectu externa) valva inferiori i /4 - i /3 longior, oblonga v. ovalis, apice
oblique truncata v. retusa. Glumellæ paleæ dissimiles. P aléa externa major, straminea, v. violascens, chartacea, opaca
(marginibus lato-membranacea), concava, tri» er via ( nervis filiformibus ; lateralibus submarginantibus, ante apicem evanescent
