GENERIC CHARACTER.
Spatha 2-valved. Corolla superior, 6-parted, persistent. Capsule elongated, narrower
at the base, 3-celled, many-seeded. Seeds roundish, naked*
SPECIFIC CHARACTER.
Hairy; scape generally four-flowered, shorter than the leaves, which are very long,
linear, and acuminated; peduncles twice as long as the flowers. B.
SYNONYMS.
H y po x is Carolinensis, Mich.

Plant varying in height from two inches to a foot. Root an oblong
or barrel-shaped bulb, marked by circular lines or rugae, about
three-fourths of an inch long, invested at the bottom and upper
part with a sphacelated, brownish-black tunic. Fibres very numerous
and thick, cylindrical and marked also by numerous circular
rings. None of the fibres come out from the under end or bottom,
nor often from any part near the bottom, but principally from the
