differing very much from each other. The greater length of the
peduncles and larger size of the flowers, seem to be the most conspicuous
circumstances in which a difference is observable from
the variety /a. The relative situation of the scale-like bracts, (which
rather appear to be glands,) so accurately pointed out and described
by Mr. Nuttall, does seem to be tolerably constant; yet a close examination
of many specimens has shown, that it is by no means an
invariable distinction. I am therefore confirmed in the opinion expressed
several years ago in the Compendium Florse Philadelphicce,
that the present plant is a mere variety of the L. Kalmii.
