This fern bears a good deal of resemblance to small
forms of the European A . Adiantum-nigmm, for which it is
taken by Michaux. Very small forms of it are somewhat like
A . Ruta-muraria, and the authors of the Synopsis Filicum
remark that it is intermediate between the two.
