S PE C IF IC c h a r a c t e r .
P u c c in ia Heraclei ; hypophylla, nigrescens, epidermide ferrugineo cincta; sporidia
congesta, obtusissima subovata bihculata; stipite brevissima.

P u c c in ia Heraclei, Grev. Fl. Edin. ined.
H ab. On the leaves, and sometimes on the petiolets o f the leaves o f Hera-
clium sphondylium, not rare. Summer. Very abundant in 1822 near
Kirkaldy.
Form somewhat irregular, roundish, scattered, never confluent, depressed,
girt by the remains of the ruptured epidermis, which is of a reddish colour.
When it occurs on the petiols, the figure is subelliptical. Sporidia
2-celled, the upper and lower cells nearly equal, very obtuse, the latter
terminating suddenly in a very minute stem.
This species approaches very near to P . umhelliferarum of
D e C a n d o l l e , which I have detected in this country on
M y rrh is odorata, Pimpinella saxífraga, and Choerophyllum
sylvestre. P . Heraclei differs in being much larger, more depressed,
and surrounded by the epidermis, which is very fugacious
in the other.
