S P E C IF IC CHARACTER.
S p h æ r i a v e r r u c o s a ; minuta, nigra, sparsa, globosa, valde verrucosa, in pileo
Sp. minute, black, scattered, globose, very warty, parasitic on the pileus of
Polyporus abietinus.
S p h æ r ia verrucosa, Grev. Fl. Edin. ined.
H a d . On the pileus of Polyporus abietinus, and probably several other species
in autumn and winter. Near Taymouth, Mr M a c i n t o s h . Carlowrie,
near Edinburgh.
Gregarious, scattered, globose, sometimes oval, quite black, rough with warts,
the interstices d eep; no trace of an orifice; within, containing a gelatinous
mass, filled with cylindrical hyaline tubes, inclosing the sporules.
Those plants of the old genus Sphceria which are destitute
of an orifice, constitute an excellent section in P e e s o o n ’s System,
under the name of Astomæ. Mr G r a y , in his N a tu ra l
Arrangement o f B ritish Plants, has formed a new genus of
them, which he calls Astoma. A distinction, however, which
may be unexceptionable in a section, may be highly inadmissible
in a genus. The only difference between the Sphceria
and the Astoma of Mr G r a y , is the presence and absence of
a mouth to the spherules,—a character certainly not of itself
