GEN ERIC CHARACTER.
Peridium verum nullum; sparidia plerumque globosa, non septata, nuda, libera;
plantulæ “ sub epidermide foliorum lierbacearum ortæ et epidermide rupia,
faxAlè dispersæ," (D e Cand.) Epidermis peridio simillima.
No true peridium (membrane enclosing the sporidia). Sporidia mostly globose,
unilocular, naked, free ; bursting through the epidermis of the leaves
of herbaceous plants, and easily dispersed. Epidermis resembling a peridium.

H ab. On the leaves of Luzula maxima, Carex penduta, and Carex pseudo-cy-
perus; generally on the superior surface. Summer. Roslin and Auchindenny
woods ; rather rare.
In its early state yellowish or reddish, soon changing to brown. Farm, tolerably
regular, oval or oblong ; epidermis rather long in bursting, which
at length it does in a longitudinal direction, giving exit to the subsphe-
rical sporules, which are by no means numerous. The pustules of this
species are surrounded by a reddish or crimson spot, particularly when
growing on Luzula maxima.
D e C a n d o l l e first described this species under the name
of U. caricis,—a name already pre-occupied by P e r s o o n ,
whose species, however, D e C a n d o l l e considered a variety
of U. segetum. Further investigation induced botanists to
