GENERIC CHARACTER.
Receptaculum oblongum, rima longitudinali dehiscens. Sporuloe in cellulis elon-
gatis gelatinosis. Crusta nulla.
Receptacle oblong, bursting by a longitudinal slit. Sporules in elongated
gelatinous cells. Crust none.

H y s t e r i u m Rubi ; ellipticum vel oblongum, utrinque atienuaium, nigrum, sub-
nitidum, obsolete striatum, cellulis sporuliferis apicibus rotundo-clavatis.
H. elliptical or oblong, attenuated at each end, black, somewhat shining, obscurely
striated, the summits of the sporuliferous cells obtusely club-
shaped.

H ad. On the stems of various species of Rubus, particularly R. cæsius and
fruticidosus. Woods on the banks of Loch Lomond, near Tarbet. Rare
about Edinburgh.
Elliptical, oblong, or even linear, somewhat flexuose, attenuated at each extremity,
black, slightly shining, obscurely striated, opening freely from
one end to the other. The gelatinous mass of sporuliferous cells very
obvious to the naked eye, o f a grey colour. Cells elongated, diaphanous,
numerous, very slender, terminating in a rounded club-shaped summit.
Sporules yellowish, 3-5 in each cell.
This is one of our most beautiful Hy ste ria , and comparatively
rare. The pulpy mass of sporuliferous cells is distinctly
visible to the naked eye, in damp weather, at wliicb time the
black corneous receptacle is open.
The celebrated D e Candolle has, in his Flore F ran çaise,
constituted a genus of these plants, under the name of
Hypoderma ; the generic difference residing only in H ypo-
derma discharging its sporuliferous pulp in an obvious manner,
