Diocious. Pe r ian th wanting. Involucre double,
the inner shorter, composed of two or more involute,
deeply cleft, d enta te leaves, which enclose the short
c ampanula te calyptra. Capsule globose, four-valved.
Ela te r s bispiral, falling away. An th e r id ia oval,
s tipitate, in the axils of perigonial leaves. Stems
fasciculate, ascending, leaves in two rows, closely
imbricate, glaucous, creeping a t the base, without

Re adily dis tinguished by the rigid julaceou.s,
th ick ly -ma tted shoots, resembling a plaited thong.
Colour also characteristic, silvery, creamy-white,
rarely da rke r grey or smoky.
