J e th o u is separated from Herm by a narrow, but
deep channel. This little islet is about a mile and a
quarter in circumference ; and although diminutive even
in comparison with Herm, it boasts a better house, and
a greater number of trees. The proprietor of Jethou,
who is a wealthy man, but whose wealth I need
scarcely say, does not arise from his possession of
Jethou, resides constantly on the island, — never
leaving it unless to paddle in his boat across the
