of a general programme. AYe therefore determined
very early in the cruise to consider everytiiing done
during tlie voyage from England to the Canary
Islands as tentative and introductory, and to regard
the first section across the Atlantic, from Teneriffe to
the AAYst Indies, as tlie commencement of the true
work of the expedition.
I f e c e i n h e r —-In the forenoon, tlie weather was
mucii more moderate, and the first sounding was
taken off the entrance of Vigo Bay at a depth of
1,125 fathoms, with a bottom of ‘ globigerina ooze ’
ricii in coccolitlis and coccosplieres. The dredge was
put over, but the sea was still too liigli and it came
uj) capsized. Later in the day a second attempt was
made with somewhat greater success, but tlie number
of species procured was small; the most remarkable
among tliem a fine specimen of U y m e n a s t e r m e m -
h r a n a c e u s of a rich crimson colour and upwards of
70 mm. in diameter. On the 1st of January, 1873,
we tried tiie dredge again, in water of moderate
deptii off Cape Mondego, but the weather was still
too boisterous and tlie attempt Avas unsatisfactory;
and on the 2nd, dredging at a depth of 1,975 fathoms
a little to the N.AV. of the Burlings, the dredge fouled
sometliing at the hottom, an unusual occurrence in
such deep water, and carried aAvay.
On the 3rd of Januai’y all our troubles were over
for the time. Passing Cape Boca and the beautiful
heights of Cintra, we steamed slowly up the Tagus,
past the straggling suburb of Lisbon with its many-
coloured villas scattered over the slopes; past the
V onderful Castle of Belem, with its elegant proportions
and rich ornament—a record of the skill and
refined taste of the old master-masons ; past the new
Palace of the Ajuda, the present residence of the
King—a large plain building, in a certain sense handsome,
hut sadly inferior in tone to the little square
Keep by the side of the river.
Fin. 19.—Belem Castle, Lisbon.
Ahout midday rve were moored in the Tagus off
the town. Several of us went on shore, and took up
our quarters at the Hôtel Braganza, where we were
very comfortable, and enjoyed greatly the splendid
idew over the toAvn and river. Some went to Cintra,
