Miller-Casella thermometer was attached to the
cable at every 100 fathoms, so that the one method
of determination might check the other. The sounding

This result appeared to he on the whole satisfactory
for a first trial, and it was Mr. Bethell’s impression
that with a little more practice in the use of Sir
William Thomson’s marine galvanometer, the instrument
employed iu ohserviug the indications, it might
be possible to arrive at considerable accuracy.
The slip water-bottle wbicb was used by Dr.
Meyer and Dr. Jacobsen in the German North Sea
Expedition of the summer of 1872 was sent down
to the bottom, and Mr. Bucbauan determined the
specific gravity of the hottom water to he 1-02581
at a temperature of 17“‘9 C., the specific gravity
of surface water being 1-02618 at a temperature oi
1 8 °-5C . . . _
All Sunday, the 16th, we spent sailing with a light
air from the northward, and hy Monday morning
we had made ahout 130 miles from onr previous
sounding. The dredge was put over at 5.15 a.m.
