the temperature of the air was 7° C., below th a t of
the day before.
On the 27th, at a distance of 450 miles from Sandy
Hook the depth was 2,850 fathoms, with a hottom
of reddish-gi’cy ooze containing some Glohigerince,
and a hottom temperature of l°-8 C. As we were
now approaching tlie southern border of the Gulf
Stream two sets of serial temperatures were taken at
intervals of 25 fathoms from the surface ;—

The small dredge was put over early ou the following
morning Avith a bread-bag lining to the net
and a 28 lb. Aveigiit slung to the tangle-bar. In the
forenoon a sounding was taken in 2,675 fathoms with
a ‘ hydra’ machine Aveighted AA'ith 3 CAvt. having a
Avater-hottle and two thermometers attached. I t
seems that the Aveights did not detach, for there Avas
a great strain in heaving in and finally the line
parted, and the ohservations on temperature and on
the specific gravity of the water Avere lost. The
dredge came up Avith a small quantity of mud
