Oil the 27th we proeeedecl steadily on our course,
and ou the 28th we sounded iu the morniug iu 2,720
fatlioius wiiti No. 1 line, to ivliich w'ere attached a
‘ Hydra ’ iiiachiiie with 4 cwt. disengaging iveiglits, a
slip Avater-hottle, aud two thermometers. At a distance
of 500 fathoms from the hottom a stopcock
w ater-hottle was bent ou to the line. The tube of the
‘ Hydra ’ was lillcd with a red mud coutaini ng a considerably
larger ]iroportioii of carbonate of lime than
iu the previous sounding, and a feiv shells of calcareous
foraminifera. As the hottom presented so
little ditferencu from the former, wdiich we had found
so nearly destitute of animal life, it was thought
unuecessary to sjiend the time aud great labour
necessarily involved iu dredging, aud w^-e proceeded
under sail after taking a series of temperature observations

from the ‘ .tCydra.’ The hottom Avas ooze still containing
a large proportion of silicate of alumina, hut
with much more calcareous matter and many more
minute shells than iu the previous sounding; shoAving
that AA'e Avcre passing from the region of dead red clay

fathoms before the dredge, and later in the day an
additional CAvt. was slipped down the line. At 5.20
P.AI. the dredge came up hottom upAvards and quite
empty. A little mud ou the netting shoAved that
it had heen at the hottom, and as the double chaiu
to Avhich the dredge is immediately attached Avas
tAvisted up into a close spiral, Ave judged that the
bouleversement of the dredge had plainly been caused
hy the twist iu the ucav line. A series of temperature
observations Avere taken at intervals of 20
fathoms from the surface to a depth of 200 fathoms,
in order to determine the depth to Avhich the temperature
of the water is affected hy direct radiation.
