met with during the winter months occasionally, almost
wherever there is water enough for them to dive.
In captivity this bird thrives admirably, and soon
becomes perfectly tame; but although several broods
have been hatched off by pinioned birds on our ponds
at Lilford, we have very seldom succeeded in rearing
any of them to maturity, either by hand-feeding or
leaving them to the care of their parents.
