number of specimens during the last two years, from the Fantee country. In the last
collection, sent by Governor Ussher, from Fantee, there were specimens of the young bird,
which, thanks to Mr. Sharpe, we have been able to figure in the accompanying plate. Mr.
Ussher, in a letter sent with the collection remarks, that these Barbets (T. goffuii) run up
and down the trunks of the palm t r e e s ; and from the observations he has made, resemble
very much the " Picidai" in their habits and movements. Their nidification and food is
exactly the same as that of T. purpuratus; and these two as it were form a sub-group of
the genus Trachyphonus, T. ca/er being t h e link between them and t h e seal)-headed Barbets,
T. margaritatus and T. squamiccps. It will be seen by the plate that the young bird differs
very little from the adult, being in this point an exception to the general rule in this family.
Two of the figures are taken from specimens in our collection given to us by Mr. Sharpe,
the third figure, of which a description is furnished, from Professor Schlegel's type
specimen in the Leiden Museum.
No other figure of this Barbet is extant, as far as we know.
